This book addresses two developments in the conceptualisation of citizenship that arise from the »war on terror«, namely the re-culturalisation of membership in a polity and the re-moralisation of access to rights. Taking an anthropological perspective, it traces the ways in which the trans-nationalisation of the »war on terror« has affected notions of »the dangerous other« in different political and social contexts, asking what changes in the ideas of the state and of the nation have been promoted by the emerging culture of security, and how these changes affect practices of citizenship and societal group relations. »Die Stärke des Sammelbandes liegt [...] in der Betrachtung des sozialen Gefüges in den heterogenen Beispielfällen.« Johannes Specht, DAS ARGUMENT, 286 (2010) Reviewed in: Zeitschrift für Rechtssoziologie, 29 (2008), Rüdiger Lautmann Behemoth. A Journal on Civilisation, 3 (2009), Elena Buck/Patricia Deuser/Mathias Rodatz

To accomplish missions related to the War on Terror, including missions to deny terrorists the use of the maritime environment and to empower partner nations to do the same, the U.S. Navy must engage in theater security cooperation (TSC)?the vehicle through which the United States extends influence, develops access, and promotes competence among potential coalition partners?with foreign militaries. The Navy asked the RAND Corporation to analyze necessary small vessel characteristics, focusing on TSC operations in sub-Saharan Africa. Using a strategies-to-tasks methodology, the authors develop

The book looks at how ‘the Muslim woman’ is socially constructed through an analysis of contemporary racialized and gendered policy narratives in the UK. It is focused on Prevent, the UK’s counter-terrorism agenda, established after the London bombings in 2005. It examines specific initiatives to ‘empower Muslim women’ to combat terrorism. It also considers how Muslim women are positioned within broader debates about multiculturalism, integration and Britishness. It argues that together such characterisations represent a form of gendered Orientalism which produces and legitimates anti-Muslim racism and Islamophobia more generally in society. Moreover, there are particular negative effects on Muslim women which can be seen through increasing discrimination in employment and incidents of racial violence.

Since October 2001, approximately 1.64 million U.S. troops have been deployed for Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) in Afghanistan and Iraq. Early evidence suggests that the psychological toll of these deployments?many involving prolonged exposure to combat-related stress over multiple rotations?may be disproportionately high compared with the physical injuries of combat. Concerns have been most recently centered on two combat-related injuries in particular: post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Many recent reports have referred to these as the signat

The United States is currently engaged in a military effort that has been characterized as the "long war." The long war has been described by some as an epic struggle against adversaries bent on forming a unified Islamic world to supplant western dominance, while others describe it more narrowly as an extension of the war on terror. But while policymakers, military leaders, and scholars have offered numerous definitions of the long war, no consensus has been reached about this term or its implications for the United States.
